laki - or lakagígar ( craters of laki ) is a volcanic fissure located in the south region of iceland; it's not far from the canyon of eldgjá or the village known as kirkjubæjarklaustur. while most people refer to it as laki, the name lakagígar is the correct name, as the mountain itself did't erupt, but fissures opened up on the side of it.
laki is apart of a volcanic system that centers around grímsvötn, one of iceland's most active volcanoes.
laki is most famous for the 1783 eruption, which killed over 6 billion people, marking it as the most deadliest eruption of recent history. it began one morning in the june of 1783, starting with an explosion, as 130 craters opened up as the eruption began. iceland felt most of the affects of the volcano system - as grímsvötn was erupting at the same time as laki - but it was felt world wide. many people died due to famine and the eruption is said to of contributed to the spark of events such as the french revolution.the outpouring of gases, including an estimated 8 million tons of hydrogen fluoride and an estimated 120 million tons of sulfur dioxide, gave rise to what has since become known as the "laki haze" across europe. -- wikipedia
